Argosy University, 980 Hammond Dr, Atlanta, GA 30328 (4th Floor - Suite 400)

About the event

This workshop explores the intersection of race, gender, and grief with a specific focus on Black men and grief. This topic warrants special attention because:

• grief is a natural social process with adverse mental health outcomes if not properly addressed

• little is understood about how men process grief

• Black men are susceptible to egregious injustices and senseless acts that also result in grievous experiences

In this workshop mental health professionals learn how to care for the grieving heart of their Black male clients. Attendees will look through an ethical and multicultural lens to understand the impact of race and gender on the grief process. Attendees will learn effective ways to engage Black men in grief work.

Participants attending this workshop will…

• Learn about different types of loss and grief

• Become familiar with research on gender differences in the grief process

• Discuss historical, social, and cultural factors that may affect how Black men experience grief

• Examine how today’s sociopolitical climate may exacerbate grief in Black men

• Explore important ethical considerations related to multicultural counseling

• Apply an ethical decision making model to a complicated multicultural ethical dilemma

• Learn effective ways to engage Black men in grief work
